Carol Badart VanWie, of Lusby, pleaded guilty in court to multiple charges involving her violations of animal cruelty laws after she left her pets in inhumane situations at her non-profit Bunny Magic and Wildlife Rabbit Rescue.
Prosecutors said that VanWie was found to have housed more than 40 rabbits and other animals in "unsanitary and inhumane conditions" at the non-profit.
A judge gave her a suspended jail sentenced, but she has been ordered not to possess any animals and must reimburse Calvert County $67,000 for the care and feeding of animals that were confiscated from her.
VanWie had previously faced more than 100 charges in connection to animal cruelty and control conduct. Bunny Magic and Wildlife Rabbit Rescue was also previously probed by PETA and other law enforcement agencies.
